Scaling and Root Planing

Scaling and root planing remove dental plaque and calculus, which cause gum tissue and surrounding bone inflammation. These procedures help the gums to reattach to the tooth roots. In this procedure, an ultrasonic cleaning device removes plaque and calculus from your teeth. These procedures work very effectively for patients suffering from gingivitis, diminish inflammation, and cause the crevices or spaces around the teeth to become less deep.

Benefits of Scaling and Root planing

Scaling and root planing procedures may be necessary for:

  • Disease prevention: The oral bacteria can travel through the bloodstream to other body parts. Heart diseases and lung infections have been linked to periodontal bacteria. Scaling and root planing remove bacteria, thus preventing other diseases.
  • Tooth protection: As the gum pocket exceeds in depth, there is a greater chance of periodontal disease. Periodontal diseases are the primary cause of tooth loss. Scaling and root planing prevent this from happening.
  • Bad breath: Periodontal diseases cause bad breath. Food particles and bacteria cause a persistent bad odor which is alleviated with scaling and root planing.

Scaling and Root planing Aftercare

Things that you can consider to reduce tooth sensitivity post scaling and root planing:

  • Thorough plaque removal daily using a soft toothbrush or dental floss.
  • A desensitizing toothpaste in place of your regular dentifrice for 4 6 weeks after the procedure.
  • Your hygienist or doctor may recommend other adjuncts for your individual needs.

Our dental staff at Spring Leaf Dentistry will be happy to review any home care procedures for you.
