Bone Graft

At Spring Leaf Dentistry, we are committed to providing our patients with the highest level of dental care. One of the services we offer is bone grafting, a procedure that can help to prevent long-term health problems associated with tooth loss and gum disease. A bone graft is a surgical procedure where a bone is fused to the existing bone in the jaw, increasing the bone in a part of the jaw where bone has been lost. A dental bone graft is also recommended when bone loss is affecting the health of your gums and teeth or to support dental implants.

What are the different types of bone grafts?

Bone grafts help prevent long-term health problems associated with tooth loss and gum disease. Different types of dental bone grafting:

  • Autografts: A bone from the back of your jaw is used.
  • Allografts: A bone from a different person is used to graft.
  • Xenografts: A bone from another species is used during grafting.
  • Alloplasts: A synthetic material, such as calcium phosphate or calcium sodium phosphosilicate (Bioglass) is used.

Am I a good candidate for a bone graft?

The most common reasons for a dental bone graft include:

  • Implants: If you are about to get implants in place of missing teeth, you might need grafting to provide a strong base.
  • Loss of tooth: A grafting procedure is recommended if you need additional support for a section of your jaw that has lost bone because of gum disease or tooth loss.
  • Impact appearance: Bone loss can impact your appearance. Loss of bone mass in the lower jaw can make it appear protruding. Bone loss is more common in older adults who have osteoporosis or a person of any age who suffered from a jaw injury.

What’s the aftercare like for bone grafting?

After a dental bone graft, you may be given a prescription for antibiotics to help prevent an infection and pain relievers to help control pain. Other postoperative care tips include:

  • Use of ice packs to help decrease pain and swelling.
  • Eat soft, bland foods, avoid crunchy and spicy food and hot liquids.
  • Avoid contact sports that may put the incision at risk
